Overview
In the late 1960s Dr. Donald Mullen joined the partnership of Robicsek and Daughtry with a focus on renal transplantation. Dr. Mullen's pioneering work laid the groundwork for what has become the largest renal transplant program in the Carolinas. To date this program has performed more than 750 renal transplants.
In 1986 Dr. Alan Thomley provided the cardiology management and support for the first successful heart transplant in Charlotte. Since that time, Sanger physicians have helped advance the treatment of patients undergoing cardiac transplantation, and in December 1991 the 100th heart transplant was performed at Carolinas Medical Center.
In 1989, Dr. Mark Stiegel performed the first pediatric heart transplant in western North Carolina on an 11-year old boy by. This was the beginning of the pediatric heart transplant program at Carolinas Heart Institute. In August 1990, the first infant heart transplant in the Carolinas was performed under the direction of pediatric cardiologist Tom Smith. Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute's pediatric cardiology department now has one of the most active pediatric cardiac transplant programs in the Carolinas.
