Back in March 2004, I was riding on a four-wheeler with a friend when we had an accident and I was thrown almost 50 feet in the air. I was conscious, but having trouble breathing. I didn't have any broken bones, but my lungs were in bad shape. My neighbor called 911, and the medics got there in about 10 minutes. They called for a helicopter to take me to the hospital. Both of my lungs had collapsed, and I was in respiratory failure. For 2 weeks I was on medicine to try and help my lungs to heal, but it wasn't working, so finally I had surgery and the doctors stitched a patch in my right lung. Non-Cardiac Thoracic Surgery Overview

Beginning in 1947, when the first lung cancer surgery in the Charlotte area was performed, The Sanger Clinic's thoracic surgery program is known as a leader in the treatment of diseases in the chest. The Sanger Clinic's surgeons now perform more than 250 surgeries annually, qualifying as one of the busiest thoracic surgery programs in the Southeast.

The physicians in this area specialize in non-cardiac thoracic pathology. This includes, but is not limited to, benign and malignant pulmonary lesions including lung cancer, benign and malignant esophageal disease, mediastinal masses, thymoma, myasthenia gravis, chest wall diseases, pleural effusions, and hyperhidrosis. Treatment options are tailored for each patient at the time of their visit.

Our staff reviews each patient's history and consults with them to formulate the most appropriate plan of action. When appropriate, minimally invasive surgical techniques are used.

Patients are taken care of by Sanger's thoracic surgery team. In addition to the surgeon, the nursing staff in the operating room specializes in thoracic procedures. The anesthesiologists have trained specifically in the field of chest anesthesia. Patients are prepared to go home by a team who identifies and addresses medical as well as social needs. The thoracic surgery team provides exceptional global care for each patient.

Sanger Clinic cardiologists and surgeons have a standing daily morning conference where patient cases are presented (either directly or via teleconference) for discussion between various subspecialties to determine the best course of action. We believe this careful consideration of options and alternatives results in the most effective course of action for our patients.
