Lipid Clinic
The Sanger Clinic established the Lipid Clinic in 1991 to provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for patients with lipid disorders. Our treatment includes both dietary intervention and medication management, emphasizing a one-on-one relationship with each patient. Our goal is to extend the length and quality of our patients' lives.
Our multidisciplinary approach to lipid treatment combines the efforts of physicians, nurses, and a nutritionist to offer preventive care for patients with high cholesterol who are at risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD), as well as those with pre-existing CHD. Often, patients are encouraged to invite family members (including children) to the clinic to undergo testing. As with many forms of heart problems, early detection is a key factor in preventing serious complications.
Lipid Clinic physicians offer specialized tests to evaluate suspected lipid disorders, including familial hypercholesterolemia. After a diagnosis is made, our physicians develop individualized treatment plans that may include diet recommendations, behaviorial modification, and cholesterol-lowering drugs. These recommendations are designed to lower cholesterol levels and to reduce the risk for heart disease.
During a clinic visit, the patients are seen by the nurse, dietitian and physician for approximately one hour. Patients provide a sample of blood for laboratory analysis that includes a number of specialized tests. There is a short follow-up visit after 6-8 weeks where lipids are checked and initial progress monitored. Following diagnosis and initiation of treatment, patients go back to their family physician for continued treatment. Follow-up visits that reinforce lifestyle and, when applicable compliance with drug treatment, usually occur at 4 month intervals.
